A birthday reminder app that remembers more than the date

Most birthday reminders tell you what day it is. The hard part is knowing it early enough to do something, and knowing what that something should be.

A good birthday reminder solves two problems. The first is timing: finding out on the morning of the birthday is enough for a message, but not for a gift, a card in the post or a dinner reservation. The second is substance. "It's Maya's birthday today" is useful. "It's Maya's birthday on Saturday, and in June she mentioned wanting the blue ceramic bowls from the shop near her office" is what lets you get it right.

What to look for in a birthday reminder app

  • Reminders ahead of time, not just on the day. A week before for gifts and plans, and on the day for the message. Ideally you choose per person.
  • A time that suits you. A reminder at 6 a.m. gets swiped away. One at the hour you usually plan your day gets acted on.
  • Easy entry. If adding a birthday takes a form with five fields, you will add three birthdays and stop.
  • Yearly repeats that just work. Enter it once, get reminded every year, including leap-day birthdays.
  • Room for notes. The date is the trigger. What they like, what they are going through and what you promised are what make the reminder useful.
  • People who are not in your contacts. Your friend's kids, your partner's parents and your neighbour rarely have a contact card, but their birthdays still matter.

Why a date alone is not enough

Think about the last birthday present you were really happy with. Chances are the person had been listening: they remembered a thing you mentioned months ago. That is the part a calendar cannot do for you. People drop gift ideas all year in passing: a book they want to read, a restaurant they keep meaning to try, a hobby they just picked up. By the time the birthday comes around, those hints are long gone.

So the most useful habit is simple: when someone mentions something they would love, write it down under their name, right away. When the reminder arrives a week ahead, the idea is already there.

The options, fairly

Your phone's calendar

Free, already installed, and reliable. A yearly event with an alert a week before works well if you are disciplined about adding them. Its limits are that there is nowhere natural to keep gift ideas or details, and birthdays of people outside your contacts get added by hand.

Social networks

Facebook and similar networks show birthdays of people who shared them. It is convenient when everyone you care about is there and has their birthday visible, which is less and less often the case, and you only find out on the day.

Dedicated birthday apps

Apps such as hip focus on birthdays alone: countdowns, reminders and often importing dates from your contacts. If birthdays are all you need to track, a focused app is a fine choice.

An app for everything people tell you

If you also want to remember the exam next Thursday, the new job, the partner's name and the gift hint from June, a birthday is just one of the things you keep about a person. That is the gap Lorami is built for.

A small routine that makes birthdays easy

  1. Add the ones you know tonight. Partner, family, closest friends. Ten minutes covers the people who matter most.
  2. Add the rest as you hear them. When someone mentions their birthday, capture it on the spot.
  3. Keep a running gift list per person. Every hint goes under their name, all year.
  4. Act on the early reminder. A week ahead, decide: message, call, card or gift. Order it then.
  5. Write down what you did. "Gave Maya the ceramic bowls, she loved them" saves you from giving them twice.

Birthdays are one of the easiest ways to show someone they matter, and one of the easiest to miss. A reminder with the right timing and the right notes turns a last-minute message into something thoughtful.
